CLUES is accepting applications for a free Manualidades (arts and crafts) program to engage participants in self-healing and community-building through learning and creating Latino folk arts and crafts. Participants will learn basic skills in papier-mache, drawing, mosaic, poetry, and weaving, with a focus on art and artisan traditions from Latin America.

This Latino-focused crafts program will help participants overcome isolation by joining in community, conversing, learning from each other and using one’s hands to create traditional Latino art forms. The program will adhere to COVID19 social distancing guidelines (some classes will be in person with appropriate distancing, and some will be virtual).

This program is designed especially for adult Spanish-speaking Latino immigrants who wish to build community with others, and who are interested in learning traditional Latino arts and crafts.  The program will be bilingual (Spanish-English), with a focus on Spanish, and is open to all applicants.

• The deadline for application is August 31^st at 5pm. Please reach out as soon as possible, as early applicants will be given preference.  To apply or ask about the program, please email arte@clues.org, or text 952-210-3598, and let us know that you are interested.  We will follow up with a phone call.
• The program will be taught by 6 Minnesota-based Latino craftspeople with varied skills.  Participants will also share their own skills and talents with each other.
• The program will run September 2020 through April 2021.  All sessions will be held at CLUES in St. Paul (797 E 7^th St, St Paul, MN 55106), 6 – 8 pm, on Tuesday evenings twice per month (with a break from mid-Dec through mid-January).
• Dates: September 15 and 29, October 13 and 27, November 10 and 24, December 8, January 19, February 9 and 23, March 9 and 23, April 6 and 20.

GRUPO DE MANUALIDADES: Construir y sanar la comunidad a través de un grupo de talleres de artes y manualidades

CLUES les invita a formar parte de nuestro Grupo Manualidades, un nuevo programa de arte y artesanías, para sanar y para construir comunidad por medio de las artes Latinas. Participantes aprenderán las técnicas de papel-mache, dibujo, mosaico, poesía, y tejido, con un enfoque en las artes de América Latina.

Este programa de arte ayudara a los participantes a salir de la insolación, participar en comunidad, conversar, y aprender comunitariamente por medio del uso de las manos. El programa esta diseñado especialmente para inmigrantes latinos hispanohablantes que quieran participar en comunidad, y que estén interesados en aprender artes y artesanías tradicionales latinas. El programa sera bilingüe (español / inglés), con un enfoque en español, y está abierto a cualquier solicitante.

Due to the recent events, our community has been surrounded by a lot of heavy feelings and questions about the future. Because of this, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center at CLUES invites youth from 12-20 years old to participate in the creation of a documentary film that can help us all to create community and give us the space to process your feelings and thoughts around the issues that our community is experiencing.

If you don’t feel comfortable filming yourself, you can also choose to interview your family members or friends. Here are some points that we would like you to address. YOU DON’T have to address all of them, but please do answer the main questions in bold.

1. How has COVID19 impacted you and your family? 

Here are some questions for you to think about:

• How do you feel about your online classes?
• What are your concerns surrounding COVID and what are you doing to ensure you are safe?
• Are your parents essential workers? How has this impacted your family?

2. What are your thoughts on the recent protests that have affected our community? 

Here are some questions for you to think about:

• Have you or your family members experienced discrimination?
• How do you feel when you see everything that is happening on the news and in your life?

3. What kind of changes would you like to see within your community or the world?

Here are some questions for you to think about:

• How are you going to be part of the change?
• Would you like to have the chance to work in your local government to create the community that you would like to see?

Las redes sociales han impulsado la etiqueta #YoMeQuedoEnCasa para promover el confinamiento en las casas y evitar los contagios por COVID-19. Ahora muchas familias alrededor del mundo siguen una iniciativa que nació en Italia bajo el nombre Tutto andrà bene. Esta campaña está llenando ventanas y puertas de las casas en muchas ciudades con dibujos hechos por niños que no pueden salir a la calle y optan por escribir mensajes positivos.

Esta propuesta ha llegado también a CLUES desde donde queremos pedir su colaboración para extender este mensaje de esperanza en Minnesota. La idea es buscar una manera de entretenerse y mantener el optimismo con mensajes como Todo saldrá bien a la vez que colorean un dibujo de un arcoiris con los más pequeños de la casa y lo exhiben en sus ventanas. ¿Se animan?

Aquí les presentamos unos sencillos pasos para participar:

1 – Descargue el dibujo para colorear del arcoiris y el  mensaje de Todo Saldrá Bien. Descarga gratuita aquí.

2 – Puede agregar otros mensajes de esperanza al dibujo, como por ejemplo: “sigamos adelante”, “somos una comunidad”, etc.

3 – Tome una foto del dibujo coloreado.

4 – Mande la foto por correo electrónico a arte@clues.org. CLUES imprimirá la foto y la pegaremos en nuestras ventanas de las oficinas de St. Paul y Minneapolis.

5 – Peque su dibujo coloreado en su ventana o puerta para que sus vecinos lo vean y se inspiren a participar.

Hashtags such as #YoMeQuedoEnCasa and #StayHome have been spreading on social media to promote self quarantine and prevent the spread of COVID-19 infections. Now many families around the world are following an initiative that was born in Italy under the name Tutto andrà bene. This campaign is filling windows and doors of houses in many cities with drawings made by children who can’t go outside and choose instead to share positive messages from home.

This campaign has also arrived at CLUES, and we would like to ask for your collaboration in spreading this message of hope throughout Minnesota! The idea is to entertain your children and family and stay positive with messages like “Everything will be OK” that you can color or draw along with a rainbow to display in your windows. Will you join us?

Here are a few simple steps to get involved:

1 – Download the rainbow coloring page and the “Todo Saldrá Bien” message. Free download here.

2 – You can add other messages of hope to the drawing, such as: “Stronger Together” or “We are a community” etc.

3 – Take a picture of the coloring page.

4 – Email the photo to arte@clues.org. CLUES will print your photo and paste it on our windows in the St. Paul and Minneapolis offices.

5 – Hang your coloring page and post it on your own window or door for your neighbors to see and be inspired to participate!

Today’s National Volunteer Week spotlight honors David Williard, who has served as Citizenship teacher since 2018. “David Williard did an excellent job leading our citizenship class on Monday evenings. David not only informed students about the US citizenship process and provided much needed practice for their naturalization interviews, but, as an associate professor of history, he gave students a deeper understanding of U.S. history and culture. His dedication to CLUES has changed the lives of many of his students who can now call themselves US citizens!” said Trisha McIntyre his supervisor.

Here’s what David had to say about what CLUES means to him: “For me, CLUES is a vital resource for community members. CLUES helps connect the Latinx population to valuable resources and assistance within the community. They have a dedicated group of people at every level from volunteers, to staff and supervisors who value and support the organization’s mission.”

Hoy con motivo de la Semana Nacional del Voluntariado queremos honrar a David Williard, quien ha servido como profesor de ciudadanía desde 2018. “David hizo un excelente trabajo dirigiendo nuestra clase de ciudadanía los lunes por la noche. David no sólo informó a los estudiantes sobre el proceso de ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos y proporcionó la tan necesaria práctica para sus entrevistas de naturalización, sino que, como profesor asociado de historia, dio a los estudiantes una comprensión más profunda de la historia y la cultura de los Estados Unidos Su dedicación a CLUES ha cambiado las vidas de muchos de sus estudiantes que ahora pueden llamarse ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos”, comenta Trisha McIntyre, su supervisora.

Today’s volunteer in the spotlight is Juana Sandoval! Juana is YA! Coach St. Paul since 2016. “Juana has gone above and beyond as a YA! mentor. She was matched with her first mentee for three years and was a huge support as she graduated and began college. Juana took her on numerous college visits in and out of state. She accompanied the family on a train ride across Wisconsin to visit Marquette University and helped them navigate the journey. She returned for orientation with her mentee to ensure she did not miss such an important part of the transition to college. She has become such a strong resource and support for her mentee, her mentee’s sister who is also in college, and for the whole family. She not only returned to YA! this year to support another senior through college applications but continues to mentor and support her previous student as well! Juana has also been a volunteer at other CLUES events and has built bridges between CLUES and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). She is humble as she receives words of thanks saying, “I’m just trying to be who I needed when I was younger.” Juana, these young ladies have been lucky to have you in their corner!” said her supervisor, Tanya Zwald.

Here’s what Juana had to say about what CLUES means to her: “CLUES has given me the opportunity to connect with Latinx youth, and to be a role model as a Latina engineer. It was one of the first organizations I heard about when I moved to Minneapolis. I am always happy to recommend CLUES as a resource, because CLUES offers so many different programs. The CLUES staff I have met have been committed to supporting the community and finding ways for volunteers to participate that are authentic and real. CLUES means being a part of a community and finding ways to support each other.”

The impact of Juana’s service: This is my 4^th school year being a mentor in the CLUES YA! program. Being a mentor has had an unexpected impact on me. Spending time with high school students helps remind me of the drive they have to improve the world and gives me a lot of hope for the future. There is a lot of focus on applying to college and navigating that process. But there’s also a lot of fun activities and discussion about more personal growth topics. I like answering questions – even for small things I take for granted now – like how to dress for a job interview. It all comes down to the cliche- but it’s so true: Be the person you needed when you were younger. I’ve kept in touch with my first mentee, she is now in college! I like that the YA! program allows high school students to see themselves (with the mentors but also with the college students who come back to help) and to know that they don’t need to try to navigate the college process on their own. Students learn that it’s OK to reach out for help, you don’t have to have all the answers, and that the CLUES community is rooting for them!

I highly recommend the YA program to other potential mentors. Seriously, I give it 5 stars! Because CLUES has other programs and staff, if your mentee or their family has more questions than you can answer, they are a great resource. The CLUES staff definitely setup the mentors for success in YA, especially following up any issues and responding to questions quickly. (Shout out to Tanya!) If you’re like me, you will end up learning about yourself in the process!

¡Con motivo de la Semana del Voluntariado queremos descartar el trabajo de  Juana Sandoval! Juana es mentora del programa YA! St. Paul desde 2016. “Juana ha ido más allá como mentora de YA! fue emparejada con su primera alumna durante tres años y fue un gran apoyo cuando se graduó y comenzó la universidad. Juana la llevó a numerosas visitas a la universidad dentro y fuera del estado. Acompañó a la familia en un viaje en tren a través de Wisconsin para visitar la Universidad de Marquette y les ayudó a navegar el proceso. Regresó para orientarse con su alumna para asegurarse de que no se perdiera una parte tan importante de la transición a la universidad. Se ha convertido en un enorme recurso y apoyo para su pupila, la hermana de su pupila que también está en la universidad, y para toda la familia. No sólo regresó a YA! este año para apoyar a otro estudiante de último año a través de las solicitudes para la universidad, sino que también continúa siendo mentora y apoyando a su estudiante anterior. Juana también ha sido voluntaria en otros eventos de CLUES y ha construido redes de conexión entre CLUES y SHPE (Sociedad de Ingenieros Profesionales Hispanos). Ella es humilde al recibir palabras de agradecimiento diciendo, “sólo estoy tratando de ser esa persona que yo necesitaba cuando era más joven”. Juana, estas jóvenes han tenido la suerte de que te cruzaras en su camino!” dice su supervisora, Tanya Zwald.

Esto es lo que Juana dice sobre lo que CLUES significa para ella: “CLUES me ha dado la oportunidad de conectarme con la juventud de Latinx, y de ser un modelo a seguir como ingeniero latino. Todo se reduce a un cliché, pero es muy cierto: Sé la persona que necesitabas cuando eras más joven. Me mantuve en contacto con mi primera alumna, ¡ahora está en la universidad! Me gusta que el programa YA! permite a los estudiantes de secundaria verse a sí mismos (con los mentores pero también con los universitarios que vuelven para ayudar) y saber que no necesitan tratar de navegar por el proceso universitario por su cuenta. Los estudiantes aprenden que está bien pedir ayuda, que no es necesario tener todas las respuestas, y que la comunidad de CLUES los apoya”.

This year, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) is April 19 through 25. The week raises awareness for victims’ rights while honoring survivors of crime.

NCVRW also commemorates the advocates that have driven the survivors’ rights movement over the years. This year’s theme is “Seek Justice — Ensure Victims’ Rights — Inspire Hope.” Due to COVID-19, many planned in-person events have been canceled. However, to commemorate the week, CLUES will be hosting a Facebook Live presentation on Thursday, April 23 at 4:00 pm recognizing the survivors in our community. CLUES is determined to respond to crime and violence by helping survivors find not only support, recovery and justice, but also a sense of hope for their future.

A Victim’s Personal Story 

Verónica was shocked to find out that her youngest daughter, only 5 years old, had been sexually abused. She knew she had to report the crime to the police, but now what? Looking for more support, she came to CLUES and found the domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy program. Verónica was paired with an advocate to help her navigate the confusing criminal justice system. At first she was skeptical – it seemed like nothing was happening with her daughter’s case while she was suffering at home. Her daughter was struggling with the trauma she experienced but was too young to fully put it into words, and Verónica just didn’t know how to help her. Her CLUES advocate helped her understand the criminal justice system, and that it moves slowly as they gather the needed proof and information for her daughter’s case. She was also referred to specialized mental health therapy to help her daughter in her recovery. Verónica’s advocate invited her to attend a CLUES support group for victims of sexual abuse and caregivers of sexual abuse victims. Verónica decided to attend, even though she didn’t really know what to expect. She never missed a session. In the group she learned about the dynamics of abuse and the effects of trauma, and learned many coping skills she could put into practice at home with her family. As she got more involved in CLUES programs like the economic empowerment homebuyer’s course and parenting education programs, she expanded her supportive community. While she and her daughter continue to work to heal from what they experienced, she now has more hope for her family and specifically her daughter’s future.

Este año, la Semana Nacional de los Derechos de las Víctimas del Crimen (NCVRW) es del 19 al 25 de abril. La semana aumenta la conciencia de los derechos de las víctimas mientras honra a los sobrevivientes del crimen.

NCVRW también conmemora a los defensores que han impulsado el movimiento por los derechos de las víctimas a lo largo de los años. El tema de este año es “Buscar la justicia – Asegurar los derechos de las víctimas – Inspirar esperanza”. Debido a COVID-19, muchos eventos planeados en persona han sido cancelados. Sin embargo, para conmemorar la semana, CLUES hará una presentación en vivo en Facebook el jueves 23 de abril a las 4:00 pm, reconociendo a los sobrevivientes de nuestra comunidad. CLUES está decidido a responder al crimen y la violencia ayudando a los sobrevivientes a encontrar no sólo apoyo, recuperación y justicia, sino también un sentido de esperanza para su futuro.

La historia personal de una víctima

Verónica entró en shock al descubrir que su hija menor, de sólo 5 años, había sido abusada sexualmente. Sabía que tenía que denunciar el crimen a la policía, ¿pero ahora qué? Buscando más apoyo, vino a CLUES y encontró el programa de defensa de la violencia doméstica y la agresión sexual. Verónica fue asignada a un consejero especialista para ayudarla a navegar por el confuso sistema de justicia criminal. Al principio era escéptica, parecía que no pasaba nada con el caso de su hija mientras ella sufría en casa. Su hija estaba luchando con el trauma que experimentó pero era demasiado joven para ponerlo en palabras, y Verónica no sabía cómo ayudarla. Su consejero le ayudó a entender el sistema de justicia criminal, y que éste se mueve lentamente mientras recopilaban las pruebas y la información necesarias para el caso de su hija. También la remitieron a una terapia de salud mental especializada para ayudar a su hija en su recuperación. El consejero de Verónica la invitó a asistir a un grupo de apoyo de CLUES para víctimas de abuso sexual y cuidadores de víctimas de abuso sexual. Verónica decidió asistir, aunque no sabía realmente qué esperar. Nunca se perdió una sesión. En el grupo aprendió sobre la dinámica del abuso y los efectos del trauma, y aprendió muchas habilidades de afrontamiento que podía poner en práctica en casa con su familia. A medida que se involucraba más en los programas de CLUES, como el curso de empoderamiento económico para compradores de vivienda y los programas de educación para padres, expandió su comunidad de apoyo. Mientras ella y su hija continúan trabajando para sanar por lo que experimentaron, Verónica ahora tiene más esperanza para su familia y específicamente para el futuro de su hija.

Today’s volunteer in the spotlight is Drew Beck! “Drew is a High School student who has been committed to serving at the Canasta Familiar program since its inception and kick-off. His dedication to the community and willingness to serve resonates in his commitment to the distribution of food to participants during the last seven months. As a high school student, Drew could dedicate these Monday evenings to hanging with friends and or enjoying his senior year, however, he chooses to dedicate it to serving the community and taking the opportunity to utilize and practice his Spanish. We enjoy having Drew at the Canasta and wish him all the best in his future endeavors!”, said his supervisors, Janelle Calvo-Nieto and Carla Kohler.

Here’s what Drew had to say about what CLUES means to him: “I was assigned a Spanish project for school, so I began volunteering at CLUES as it was a place where I could complete this project. Eventually, my project ended, but I chose to continue to volunteer at CLUES because it had become a place where I wanted to be and where I got to connect with the community during my weekly volunteer shifts.”

¡Hoy queremos destacar la historia de nuestro voluntario: Drew Beck! “Drew es un estudiante de secundaria que se ha comprometido a servir en el programa Familiar de Canasta desde su inicio y puesta en marcha. Su dedicación a la comunidad y su voluntad de servir resuena en su compromiso con la distribución de alimentos a los participantes durante los últimos siete meses. Como estudiante de secundaria, Drew podía dedicar estas tardes de los lunes a pasar el rato con sus amigos y/o disfrutar de su último año, sin embargo, elige dedicarlo a servir a la comunidad y aprovechar la oportunidad de utilizar y practicar su español. Disfrutamos de tener a Drew en la Canasta y le deseamos todo lo mejor en sus futuros esfuerzos”, dijeron sus supervisores, Janelle Calvo-Nieto y Carla Kohler.

Esto es lo que Drew dijo sobre lo que CLUES significa para él: “Me asignaron un proyecto de español para la escuela, así que empecé a ser voluntario en CLUES ya que era un lugar donde podía completar este proyecto. Eventualmente, mi proyecto terminó, pero elegí continuar como voluntario en CLUES porque se había convertido en un lugar donde quería estar y donde podía conectarme con la comunidad durante mis turnos semanales de voluntariado”.
